According to the Independent, the rhinoceros, named Sudan, 40 years old, is fitted with a radio transmitter and is heavily guarded with armed protection 24/7 at its residence in Kenya. Its horns have also been trimmed to prevent poaching.
"The only reason we cut off Sudan's horns was to deter poachers. If the rhino no longer has horns, it will no longer be a target for them. This is done purely to ensure Sudan's safety," explained Elodie Sampere, a park ranger at Sudan's care facility.
Sudan and two females of the same species have been cared for at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya since late 2009. These are three of the five remaining northern white rhinos in the world. According to scientists, Sudan and the two remaining females have increasingly reduced chances of reproduction. However, they are still working to help Sudan mate, hoping that the offspring will help protect the species from extinction.
According to statistics from the World Wildlife Fund, more than 2,000 northern white rhinos lived in the world in 1960. By 1984, only 15 remained due to excessive poaching. Not only were rhinos slaughtered for their horns, which fetched $75,000 per kilogram, but poachers also threatened the lives of wildlife conservationists.
