Following the military coup that overthrew and arrested President Mohamed Morsi on July 3, 2013, Egypt became the stage for numerous terrorist attacks targeting security forces, although most methods used were rather crude and not highly lethal. However, a few attacks resulted in the deaths of many police officers and soldiers – the casualty count sometimes reaching hundreds.

Most of these attacks were claimed by two jihadist terrorist groups, Ajnad Misr and Ansar Beit al-Maqdess. Notably, Ansar Beit al-Maqdess has claimed links to al Qaeda and recently expressed support for the Islamic State (IS).

These organizations claim this is retaliation for the current government's bloody crackdown on supporters of the ousted President Morsi. The most brutally persecuted group is the Muslim Brotherhood, with which he had close ties and which has won every election since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011.
