(Baonghean.vn) - On the evening of Tuesday, October 14, a bombing took place in the center of Cairo, Egypt, injuring at least 12 people.

The explosion occurred shortly before midnight near a courthouse and a subway station, in a neighborhood that was quite crowded at the time. A senior Interior Ministry official appeared on state television to say it was a terrorist bombing. According to a police officer at the scene, the attack "targeted a few police officers who were present at the scene."

After the military coup that overthrew and detained President Mohamed Morsi on July 3, 2013, Egypt became the scene of numerous terrorist attacks targeting security forces, although most of the methods used were quite rudimentary and non-lethal. However, some of the attacks resulted in the deaths of police and soldiers – the casualty toll sometimes running into the hundreds.

Most of these attacks were claimed by two jihadist terrorist groups, Ajnad Misr and Ansar Beit al-Maqdess. In particular, Ansar Beit al-Maqdess has also declared its affiliation with al Qaeda and most recently expressed its support for the Islamic State (IS).

These organizations claim this is retaliation for the current regime's bloody repression of supporters of ousted President Morsi. The most brutal target of repression is the Muslim Brotherhood, with which he has close ties and which has won every election since Hosni Mubarak was ousted in 2011.
