Following the military coup that ousted and detained President Mohamed Morsi on July 3, 2013, Egypt has been the scene of numerous terrorist attacks targeting security forces, although most of the attacks have been crude and non-lethal. However, some of the attacks have resulted in the deaths of police and soldiers – sometimes in the hundreds.
Most of these attacks were claimed by two jihadist terrorist groups, Ajnad Misr and Ansar Beit al-Maqdess. In particular, Ansar Beit al-Maqdess has also declared its affiliation with al Qaeda and most recently expressed its support for the Islamic State.
The groups say the crackdown is in retaliation for the regime's brutal crackdown on supporters of ousted President Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood group he is closely linked to and which has won every election since Hosni Mubarak was ousted in 2011.
