Terrorists attacked the Riu Imperial Marhaba hotel, a spokesman for the Tunisian Interior Ministry announced. The ministry said at least 27 people were killed and six injured in the attack.
According to the BBC, at least one terrorist was killed in a shootout with police.
Sousse is one of Tunisia's most popular seaside resorts, attracting visitors from Europe and neighboring North African countries.
Tunisia was rocked in March when Islamist gunmen opened fire at the Bardo Museum in Tunis, killing a group of foreign tourists. This was one of the worst attacks in a decade in the country.
