Ford Edge - a new hope for the SUV segment.

Edge is a globally-oriented SUV model that the American automaker is using to increase options for European customers.

European customers are known for being discerning and having distinct tastes, but now they are also starting to move from sedans to SUVs, following the general trend worldwide. Previously, Ford only had the Kuga, then the EcoSport, but the EcoSport was unsuccessful. Now, the American automaker is bringing the Edge to the Old Continent.

Appearing at the Frankfurt Motor Show wasn't the first time the Edge was introduced to European customers; it had previously been at the Paris Motor Show last year, but not much information was available. The SUV features a global design, with a common styling approach seen on current Ford models.

The engine on the Edge in Europe is a Duratorq TDCi Diesel, with the top-of-the-line version producing 207 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Notable technologies include Cross Traffic Alert, which uses radars mounted on the sides and rear of the vehicle to assist the driver when parking, and inflatable rear seatbelts. Ford has not yet revealed the price for the new SUV.

In Ford's product lineup, if the Ecosport is a small SUV developed from the Fiesta, and the Kuga from the Focus, then the Edge is built upon the Mondeo.
