The family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hai, from Hamlet 8, Dien Thinh Commune, is tending to their winter vegetable crop.

Dien Thinh commune, Dien Chau district, has 40 hectares of winter vegetables. Starting planting in September, farmers have already harvested several crops. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, from Hamlet 8, said: On her two plots of land, her family mainly grows leafy greens, from sweet cabbage to sprouts, for eating raw, rotating continuously. Vegetables are more expensive at the beginning of the season, but currently, she is still selling them at prices ranging from 3,500-4,000 VND/kg for Hanoi cabbage used for pickling and 7,000 VND/kg for sweet cabbage. According to Ms. Hai, "never before has the weather been as favorable for vegetable growth as this year. There has been almost no rain, and few pests and diseases, so there's no need to use pesticides; the vegetables just grow well after being sown."

According to Mr. Cao Hieu, chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Thinh commune: Although the area planted with vegetables is not as large as corn and peanuts, in recent years, various types of vegetable crops have proven to be very economically effective on the arable land in Dien Thinh. Vegetable crops can bring in several hundred million dong per hectare. With vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, etc., Dien Thinh vegetables are not only consumed within the district and in Vinh City and Nghi Loc, but in recent years, people have also invested in buying trucks to collect and transport them for sale in Ha Tinh, and mountainous districts such as Que Phong, Con Cuong, and Ky Son…

Kohlrabi is a popular vegetable grown during the winter season in Dien Thanh commune.

With 46 hectares of various vegetable crops, the Dien My Agricultural Cooperative is increasingly demonstrating its significant economic efficiency during the winter season. Many areas previously used for growing sweet potatoes and soybeans are gradually being converted by farmers to growing corn and various vegetables.

This winter season, Dien Chau district has 1,500 hectares of commercial vegetables such as cabbage, gourds, and cauliflower, concentrated in the communes of Dien Thanh, Dien Ky, Dien Phong, Dien Xuan, Dien Hanh, etc. The district is also directing the development of additional areas in Dien Loc and Dien Binh. Currently, Dien Binh has 20 hectares of cucumbers and gourds grown on rice fields, yielding an income of about 6 million VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters).

According to vegetable growers, although prices fluctuate according to market conditions and seasons, a vegetable crop is never unprofitable. With continuous crop rotation, farmers can earn up to several hundred million VND per hectare. In the future development plan, the district will direct the cultivation of off-season gourds and pumpkins to have early-season products for sale at higher prices, increasing economic efficiency.
