UN Security Council has 5 new non-permanent members

On October 15, the United Nations General Assembly voted to elect five new non-permanent members of the Security Council. The elected countries are Egypt, Japan, Senegal, Ukraine and Uruguay.

With only five countries nominated this time, all candidates easily passed the vote at the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, with Egypt winning 179 votes, Japan 184 votes, Senegal 187 votes, Ukraine 177 votes and Uruguay 185 votes.

The new members will begin their two-year terms on the Security Council in January 2016, replacing Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania and Nigeria.

The United Nations Security Council consists of 15 member countries, including 5 permanent members (UK, France, US, Russia and China) and 10 non-permanent members./.
