Applying toothpaste to the entire surface of the toothbrush is a wasteful practice, as adults only need a pea-sized amount.

We all want sparkling white teeth, so we often tend to use a lot of toothpaste without realizing that the bristles of the toothbrush are what actually do the cleaning. Speaking with Greatist, dentist Steven Goldberg in Manhattan (USA) advises adults to use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste each time they brush their teeth, as shown in the image below.

Each time you brush your teeth, you should only use an amount of toothpaste the size of a pea.

For children under 6, only a rice-grain-sized amount of toothpaste should be used because they may swallow it or experience fluoride exposure that causes stains on their teeth. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty, spokesperson for the American Dental Association, said that while adults don't have a problem using a lot of toothpaste, it would be an unnecessary waste.
