How much toothpaste is enough?

Covering the entire surface of the toothbrush with toothpaste is a waste of money because adults only need a pea-sized amount.

We all want to have sparkling white teeth, so we often tend to use a lot of toothpaste without realizing that the bristles of the toothbrush are the ones that do the cleaning. Talking to Greatist, Manhattan dentist Steven Goldberg advises adults to only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste each time they brush their teeth, as shown in the photo below.

Each time you brush your teeth you should only use an amount of toothpaste the size of a pea.

For children under 6, use only a small amount of toothpaste equivalent to a grain of rice, as they can sometimes swallow toothpaste or develop fluorosis, which can cause stains on their teeth. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty, a spokeswoman for the American Dental Association, said adults may not have a problem using too much toothpaste, but it is unnecessary waste.
