How much toothpaste is enough?
Covering the entire surface of the toothbrush with toothpaste is an unnecessary waste because adults only need a pea-sized amount.
We all want to have sparkling white teeth, so we tend to use a lot of toothpaste without realizing that the bristles of the toothbrush are the ones doing the cleaning. Talking to Greatist, Manhattan dentist Steven Goldberg advises adults to only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste each time they brush their teeth, as shown in the photo below.![]() |
Each time you brush your teeth, you should only use an amount of toothpaste about the size of a pea. |
For children under 6, use only a small amount of toothpaste equivalent to a grain of rice, as they can sometimes swallow toothpaste or develop fluorosis, which can cause stains on their teeth. While adults may not have a problem using more toothpaste, it is unnecessary waste, said Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty, a spokeswoman for the American Dental Association.
