Mulberry leaves are also known as tang ye. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, mulberry leaves have a bitter-sweet taste and a cooling nature; they affect the lungs and liver; and have the effect of dispelling wind-heat.

They are used to treat wind-heat colds, headaches, red eyes, bronchitis, dry cough with little phlegm, thirst and dry mouth. The daily dose is 6-15g in the form of decoctions, infusions, etc. The following are some medicinal recipes using mulberry leaves:

Dissipating wind-heat:

To treat newly developed colds caused by wind-heat, with thirst, slightly yellow tongue coating, or coughs due to wind-heat: mulberry leaves 12g, chrysanthemum flowers 12g, forsythia 12g, mint 4g, licorice 4g, almond 12g, balloon flower root 8g, reed root 20g. Decoction for oral administration.

To treat wind-heat, excessive coughing, chest tightness, and yellow phlegm: 12g mulberry leaves, 12g honeysuckle, 10g mint, 10g chrysanthemum, 10g mugwort, 8g Iris tectorum. Decoction to be taken once a day for 5 consecutive days.

Dengue fever prevention: 12g mulberry leaves, 16g starfruit leaves, 12g kudzu root, 12g plantain, 12g rehmannia root, 12g bamboo leaves. Boil and drink one dose daily. Drink regularly during an outbreak.

Soothes the lungs, relieves coughs:

Recipe 1: Mulberry Leaf and Apricot Kernel Decoction: mulberry leaves 8g, apricot kernels 12g, fritillaria bulb 8g, fermented soybeans 4g, gardenia peel 8g, pear peel 8g, salvia miltiorrhiza 8g. Decoction for oral administration. Treats dry cough without phlegm, headache, fever, and red tongue.

Recipe 2: Mulberry leaves, 10g of silkworm pupae, 5g of mint. Decoction for oral administration. Treats sore throat and dry cough.

Cools the liver, improves eyesight:

Recipe 1: Mulberry leaves 12g, chrysanthemum flowers 12g, cassia seeds 8g. Decoction for oral administration. Treats conjunctivitis, red, swollen, and painful eyes.

Recipe 2: Mulberry leaves 63g, Glauber's salt 12g. Boil mulberry leaves to obtain 500ml of liquid, discard the residue, dissolve the Glauber's salt in the liquid, and wash the eyes while it is still warm. Treats trachoma, eye pain, and itchy eyes.

To lower blood pressure: take 20g of mulberry leaves, 20g of mulberry branches, and 20g of fig seeds, add 1000ml of water, decoct until 600ml remains; soak your feet in this mixture for 30-40 minutes before going to bed.

Medicinal dishes containing mulberry leaves:

Mulberry leaf, chrysanthemum, mint, and licorice tea: 10g mulberry leaves, 10g chrysanthemum flowers, 10g mint, 10g licorice. Steep in boiling water and drink as a substitute for regular tea. Suitable for cases of colds with fever and chills.

Mulberry leaf, chrysanthemum, goji berry, and cassia seed tea: 9g mulberry leaves, 9g chrysanthemum flowers, 9g goji berries, 6g cassia seeds. Brew with boiling water and drink as tea. Used for headaches, dizziness, and vertigo.

Mulberry leaf and chrysanthemum porridge: 10g mulberry leaves, 12g chrysanthemum flowers, 10g fermented soybeans, 60g rice. Boil the herbs to extract the liquid, then cook the rice into porridge. Once the porridge is cooked, add the herbal decoction and continue cooking until it boils evenly. Serve hot. This dish is good for people with eye pain due to conjunctivitis and trigeminal neuralgia caused by facial trauma.

Pork Lung Stew with Mulberry Leaves and Scrophularia: 15g mulberry leaves, 20g Scrophularia, 250g pork lung. Wrap the mulberry leaves and Scrophularia in cheesecloth. Wash and slice the pork lung. Stew the ingredients thoroughly, remove the herbal pouch, and season to taste. Consume for 5-10 consecutive days. This dish is beneficial for people with lacrimal duct obstruction causing dry conjunctivitis.

Taboos:It should not be used once the measles rash has appeared.
