The document was signed in the presence of the head of the "Rosatom" corporation, Sergey Kiriyenko, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Laos, Somsavat Lengsavad, during his visit to Russia.
Within the framework of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding, the parties plan to establish cooperation in the fields of design, equipping, and operation of nuclear power reactors; conducting basic and applied research; nuclear and radiation safety; nuclear medicine; and training specialized personnel.
In addition, the parties also plan to prepare for the signing of an Intergovernmental Agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Laos is currently one of the leading countries in Southeast Asia in hydropower and supplies electricity to neighboring countries, specifically Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. Previously, Laos signed an agreement to supply Vietnam with 5 GW of electricity.
Exports to neighboring Thailand are projected to reach 10 GW. Singapore could also be a potential customer for Lao electricity. Currently, the total capacity of domestic power plants is 8 GW. There are over 80 projects underway to build new power plants, which, upon completion, would bring Laos's electricity production capacity to approximately 22 GW.
