State Corporation "Rosatom" and Laos have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, - as reported on the website of "Rosatom".

Laos will cooperate with Russia to build a nuclear power plant.

The document was signed in the presence of the head of the "Rosatom" corporation Sergey Kiriyenko and Deputy Prime Minister of Laos Somsavat Lengsavad during his visit to Russia.

Within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding just signed, the parties plan to establish cooperation in the fields of design, equipment and operation of nuclear power reactors; conducting basic and applied research, nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear medicine and training of professional personnel.

In addition, the parties also plan to prepare for the signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Laos is now one of the leading countries in Southeast Asia in hydropower and supplies electricity to neighboring countries, namely Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Previously, Laos signed an agreement to supply electricity to Vietnam in the amount of 5 GW.

Exports to neighboring Thailand are expected to reach 10 GW. Singapore could also be a potential buyer of Lao electricity. Currently, the total capacity of the country's power plants is 8 GW. There are more than 80 projects to build new power plants, which, when completed, should bring Laos's electricity production capacity to around 22 GW.
