The first Earth Day event was held in the United States nearly five decades ago, initiated by former Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson after he witnessed a horrific oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara, California.

Former US President Bill Clinton once stated: "As the father of Earth Day, Nelson was also a pioneer who later created other events that followed Earth Day, which were the Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act."

Soon after Earth Day was launched globally, many celebrities joined in, including Hollywood stars Leonardo Dicaprio and Emma Watson.

The day has its own symbolic flag, created by American peace activist John McConnell. The Earth Day song is also composed specifically based on the music of Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy”, but with lyrics about protecting the “blue planet”.
