The first Earth Day event was held in the US nearly five decades ago, initiated by former Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson after he witnessed a horrific oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara, California.

Former US President Bill Clinton once stated: "As the father of Earth Day, Nelson was also a pioneer who later gave birth to other events that followed Earth Day, which were the Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act."
Soon after Earth Day was launched globally, many celebrities joined in, including Hollywood stars Leonardo Dicaprio and Emma Watson.
The day has its own symbolic flag, created by American peace activist John McConnell. The Earth Day song is also composed based on the music of Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy”, but with lyrics about protecting the “blue planet”.

On Earth Day 2016, people often organize activities to protect the environment such as propaganda calling on everyone to join hands to protect the living environment, organize tree planting, collect garbage, and protect a clean and green living environment.
Today, Earth Day is not just a national event but has become a global phenomenon, taking place not just for one day, but for a whole week. The message of Earth Day 2016 is: "Trees for the Earth"./.
