Japanese automaker Nissan will recall more than 3.8 million vehicles, mostly in North America, due to a defect in the passenger-side airbag.

Nissan's recall campaign involves the Nissan Altima, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Sentra and Rogue models from the 2013 - 2017 period.

The recall will affect nearly 3.5 million Nissan vehicles and about 381,000 Infiniti vehicles worldwide, of which more than 80 percent were sold in the North American market.

Nissan says a faulty sensor that doesn’t properly detect when someone is in the passenger seat could cause the airbag to fail to deploy in the event of a collision. The Japanese automaker is currently developing a replacement part and will notify dealers by the end of May.

It is not yet clear whether the recall is related to Japanese auto parts giant Takata, which has been rocked by a faulty airbag that has been blamed for 11 deaths and was fined $97 million./.
