The recall will affect nearly 3.5 million Nissan vehicles and about 381,000 Infiniti vehicles worldwide, of which more than 80 percent were sold in the North American market.
Nissan said a faulty sensor that doesn't properly detect when a person is in the passenger seat could cause the airbag to fail to deploy in the event of a collision. The Japanese automaker is currently manufacturing a replacement part and will notify dealers by the end of May.
It is not yet clear whether the recall is related to Japanese auto parts giant Takata, which has been rocked by faulty airbags blamed for 11 deaths and fined $97 million./.
