(Baonghean.vn) - The practice of unregistered marriages among the Mong ethnic group in Tri Le (Que Phong) is on the rise, posing many challenges for local authorities in their management efforts.

Pà Khốm is one of ten Hmong villages in Tri Lễ commune, Quế Phong district. In Pà Khốm village, everyone knows the story of Mr. Thò Giống Mùa marrying Ms. Thò Y Dênh from Đen Đín village, Phăn Thong commune, Mường Quắn district (Laos). Mr. Mùa recounted that it only takes about two hours to walk through the forest from Pà Khốm village to Đen Đín village. Therefore, during every festival, young people from one village would visit the other, and if they liked each other, they would live together.

During a trip to Laos, Mr. Mua met Ms. Tho Y Denh, and they moved to Pa Khom to live together. To date, they have had 13 children. Tho Ba Nenh, Mr. Mua's eldest son, also married a Laotian woman. Although they have been living in Vietnam for three years and have two children together, Tho Ba Nenh and his wife have not registered their marriage.

Thò Bá Nênh confided: "I went from village to village courting girls, and when I met my wife, she was very beautiful. We both liked each other, so we got married and returned to Vietnam without registering our marriage, actually because we didn't know the law. This time, thanks to the Border Guard's persuasion, my wife and I will register. I hope my wife will be granted Vietnamese citizenship so we can have a stable life..."

As Gia Ba Cu had an older sister who married a man in Laos, during a visit to Huoi Ngua village, Muong Quan district, Laos, Tho Ba Cu met and fell in love with Tho Y Di because of her shy, demure smile... So, without registering the marriage, Y Di followed Ba Cu to Pa Khom. To this day, this family has two children.

Surveys show that in Que Phong district, there are currently 41 couples who married outside the border area without legal registration, mainly concentrated in the two border communes of Tri Le and Thong Thu. Of concern is that this is one of the causes of illegal migration among the Mong ethnic group.

Captain Mua Ba Lu, head of the armed team at Border Guard Post 519, believes that the reason for non-marital marriages is due to long-standing beliefs and customs. Border guards have gone to each household to educate and encourage couples to register their marriages and obtain household registration documents, but they still face many difficulties and obstacles due to traditional customs.

Ms. Truong Thi Tuyet Mai, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Que Phong District, expressed concern that although they do not have marriage certificates, the local authorities still have to issue them all the necessary documents such as civil registration, household registration, health insurance cards, and birth certificates. This inadvertently leads to a reverse process. While they have not yet been granted Vietnamese citizenship, these individuals have already been issued Vietnamese documents.

Therefore, relevant authorities need to promptly implement solutions to facilitate the process of obtaining Vietnamese citizenship by simplifying procedures, in order to help individuals settle down and live peacefully, thereby reducing uncontrolled migration.
