On August 3, North Korea launched a ballistic missile from its east coast. The missile flew hundreds of miles before landing not far from the northern coast of Japan.

According to NHK television, citing sources from the Japanese government, Tokyo has entered the final stage to officially put the missile interception system into operation, especially after North Korea has continuously launched ballistic missiles recently.

NHK added that the defense system is ready to go into operation. This means the Japanese government will deploy missile defense interceptors and destroyers equipped with advanced radar systems.

North Korea has been under international pressure since its nuclear test in January and a long-range rocket launch in February. The United Nations Security Council in March imposed what it called the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Pyongyang.

In July, the US Department of Defense announced that it would deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system in South Korea to counter the threat from Pyongyang.
