On August 3, North Korea launched a ballistic missile from its east coast. The missile then flew hundreds of miles before landing not far from the northern coast of Japan.
According to NHK television, citing sources from the Japanese government, Tokyo has entered the final stage to officially put the missile interception system into operation, especially after North Korea has continuously carried out recent ballistic missile launches.
NHK added that the defense system is ready to go into operation. This means the Japanese government will deploy missile defense interceptors and destroyers equipped with advanced radar systems.
North Korea has been under pressure from the international community since its nuclear test in January and long-range rocket launch in February. The United Nations Security Council in March issued what were considered the harshest sanctions ever imposed on Pyongyang.
In July, the US Department of Defense announced that it would deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system in South Korea to counter the threat from Pyongyang.
