August 22, 2016 08:20

At 7am this morning (August 22, Vietnam time), the closing ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympics will take place at the Maracana Stadium. After days of intense competition, the Olympics, held for the first time in a South American country, ended with many memorable moments.

Most expensive in history

In the 120-year history of the modern Olympics, since the Athens Olympics were held in 1996, it can be affirmed that the Rio 2016 Olympics is the most expensive Olympics in history. In terms of total revenue, from broadcasting rights, sponsorship money, sponsors' value, athlete assets and the amount earned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Rio 2016 is the most valuable Olympics. In the advertising field alone, the 11 global sponsors of the Rio 2016 Olympics have a total capitalization of more than 1,500 billion USD. Total advertising revenue of the Rio Olympics is expected to reach 9.3 billion USD, a record number that no other Summer Olympics can match.

In terms of television broadcasting rights, the Rio Olympics had the biggest revenue when the IOC earned 4.1 billion USD. NBCUniversal - the television company holding the copyright for Rio 2016 in the US spent 1.23 billion USD on this event. The station also sold 1 billion USD in advertising slots since March. The BBC also spent nearly 100 million pounds (more than 130 million USD) on Rio 2016, nearly double that of 2012. Seven (Australia) also said that the demand for advertising from businesses in this country is unprecedented and could break the revenue record of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The next Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo (Japan) in 2020. The opening ceremony of the Olympics is scheduled to take place on July 24, and the closing ceremony will be held on August 9. The Japanese government plans to spend more than 3 billion USD to organize the 2020 Olympics.

However, the most expensive ones do not necessarily bring profits or new developments in services and economy for the host country Brazil. According to a report from Moody's Investors Service, the Olympics will help Brazil improve Rio's infrastructure, but the increase in tourists will not be able to help Brazil escape its longest recession since 1930.

Farewell to the legends

The Rio 2016 Olympics ended with mixed emotions. There were still some flaws in the organization, sexual scandals, and accidents during the competition, but it was undeniable that Brazil had made the utmost effort to organize the Olympics to the best of their ability, especially at a time when the threat of terrorism could break out anywhere.

In terms of expertise, coincidentally, this is the last Olympic Games in the careers of many legends. At an advanced age and no longer physically and mentally fit enough to aim for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, these superstars have "burned themselves out" and created special marks. On the blue track, super swimmer Michael Phelps (USA) won 5 Gold Medals (HCV), 1 Silver Medal (HCB) to complete his huge collection of achievements. Phelps is so great, the most successful athlete in Olympic history and it will certainly be a very, very long time before another athlete can approach (let alone equal or surpass) his super records.

On the track, “lightning bolt” Usain Bolt (Jamaica) once again won all 3 gold medals in his favorite distances of 100m, 200m and men’s 4x100m relay. Bolt has confirmed that he will not appear in the next Olympics and this is his sweetest farewell.

Unlike Phelps or Bolt, badminton player Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) came to Rio with great desire, after only winning silver medals in the men's singles twice before. Although he defeated his great rival Lin Dan (China) in the semi-finals, the world No. 1 missed out on the gold medal when he lost to Chen Long in the final. At 33 years old, this is certainly one of the sad memories for Lee Chong Wei./.
