The tournament is held from June 27th to July 10th. It is the oldest and most prestigious tournament in tennis, and one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

At Wimbledon this year, security checks will be tighter than at any previous tournament. The screening of suspicious individuals will be expanded, and armed police will be deployed.

Tennis clubs advise people to check the tournament website for information before attending matches, and to be aware that they may be subjected to bag and body checks before being allowed onto the court.

The tightened security measures are described as “comprehensive and appropriate” to the level of terrorist threat in the UK.

A Wimbledon spokesperson said: “Security measures are being implemented in proportion to the threats and are being carried out in multiple layers, capable of responding to any situation.”

Security measures have been heightened following terrorist attacks in France and Belgium over the past year. Prior to that, many sporting events around the world had also implemented similar measures.

A spokesperson for the London Metropolitan Police said: “A range of actions will be in place. Some actions will be visible to the public, while others will be carried out covertly by special armed units. Armed police have provided security for tennis tournaments before. But this year, they are being deployed in a more specialized way.”
