(Baonghean.vn) - Traveling to Europe will become more complicated for British citizens after Brexit, as the European Union (EU) is discussing a new, stricter plan to tighten entry rules into the bloc.

New legislation for the European Union's Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will require travelers to the Schengen area, which comprises 26 European countries, to obtain a visa.

This plan is part of a comprehensive action program to prevent terrorist forces from secretly infiltrating Europe in recent times, as evidenced by a series of serious attacks in Belgium and France.

According to media reports, the European Commission is expected to announce these new rules later this year. The plan will operate in a manner similar to how the US Electronic Travel Authorization System (ESTA) currently works.

Accordingly, ESTA requires travelers from countries participating in the visa waiver program to register online before their trips. Then, U.S. immigration services will determine whether the individual is eligible to enter the country.

EU officials say a possible solution to this problem could be an agreement similar to what Brussels has done with Norway or Switzerland – countries that are not EU members but are not obligated to require visas.

"Such an agreement will certainly be on the agenda of post-Brexit negotiations between Brussels and London, now that the UK has become a third country like Türkiye after Brexit," EU officials added.

European Union officials have proposed a series of measures to bolster security amid the increasingly complex migration crisis and terrorist threat.

Particularly noteworthy is the initiative to share customer information, requiring airlines to transfer passengers' personal information to governments and European Union agencies.
