At least 24 passengers were killed when a bus lost control and plunged into the Neelum River, which flows through Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, Pakistani police said today (September 24).

According to local authorities, the incident occurred on the night of September 23 and the location of the bus falling into the river is about 50km north of the capital Muzaffarabad of the Kashmir region.

Only one person survived the accident. Rescuers have only recovered four bodies out of 24 missing passengers presumed dead.

In recent times, traffic accidents causing loss of life have become common in Pakistan. The main cause is believed to be the country's increasingly degraded road infrastructure and reckless driving habits of road users.
