(Baonghean.vn) – Following the floods, farmers in the rice-growing areas of Dien Chau have begun planting 1,200 hectares of winter crops on land previously used for two rice crops.

Of the 1,200 hectares of winter crops, 1,000 hectares are corn and 200 hectares are vegetables, gourds, and pumpkins in communes such as Dien My, Dien Loc, Dien Thai, and Dien Phu. Currently, about 50% of the winter crop area has been planted.

To compete with the weather and achieve high production efficiency, farmers have introduced mechanization into the fields. Previously, manual production took 3 days and 3 people to complete one sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of corn, but now, with improved plows, it only takes 30 minutes to prepare the land and 2 hours for sowing. Mechanization has provided the impetus for Dien Chau to rapidly increase the area of winter corn production from 700 hectares in 2014 to 1,250 hectares in 2016.

To encourage winter crop cultivation on double-cropped rice land, the People's Committee of Dien Chau district has implemented a support mechanism of 50,000 VND/sao for concentrated areas of 5 hectares or more. The Provincial People's Committee also has a policy of supporting 50,000 VND/sao for winter corn cultivation on double-cropped rice land. It is expected that by mid-October, Dien Chau will have completed 1,200 hectares of winter crops on double-cropped rice land.

In the winter crop season of 2016, according to the plan, the entire Dien Chau district planted 5,500 hectares of winter crops, including nearly 3,300 hectares of corn, of which over 1,000 hectares were under contract with TH Milk Company for product purchase, and 700 hectares of winter peanuts mainly for seed supply.

In addition, this year Dien Chau continues to expand the cultivation of high-economic-value vegetables such as green squash, pumpkin, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, short-term vegetables, potatoes, and cucumbers by 1,200 hectares. Also during this winter season, the district continues to direct the construction of two greenhouse vegetable farming models covering 5.2 hectares in Dien Thanh and Dien Lam communes.
