Dien Chau planted 1,200 hectares of winter crops on 2-rice land

(Baonghean.vn) – After the flood, farmers in the communes of Dien Chau rice growing area have started planting 1,200 hectares of winter crops on 2-rice land.

In 1,200 hectares of winter crops, there are 1,000 hectares of corn and 200 hectares of vegetables, gourds, and squash in communes such as Dien My, Dien Loc, Dien Thai, and Dien Phu. Currently, winter crops have been planted in about 50% of the area.

To compete with the weather and achieve high efficiency in production, people have brought mechanization into the fields. If in the past, manual production took 3 days and 3 people to complete 1 sao of corn, now with improved plows, it only takes 30 minutes to complete the land preparation and 2 hours for sowing. Mechanization has created the driving force for Dien Chau to rapidly increase the winter corn production area from 700 hectares in 2014 to 1,250 hectares in 2016.

Bringing mechanization into winter crop production

To encourage winter crop cultivation on double-rice land, Dien Chau District People's Committee has a support mechanism of 50,000 VND/sao for concentrated areas of 5 hectares or more. The Provincial People's Committee also has a support policy of 50,000 VND/sao for winter corn cultivation on double-rice land. It is expected that by mid-October, Dien Chau will complete 1,200 hectares of winter crops on double-rice land.

In the 2016 winter crop, according to plan, the entire Dien Chau district will plant 5,500 hectares of winter crops, with nearly 3,300 hectares of corn, of which over 1,000 hectares have signed a contract with TH Milk Company to purchase products, and 700 hectares of winter peanuts mainly to supply peanut seeds.

Corn acreage in some communes has turned green.

In addition, this year Dien Chau continues to expand 1,200 hectares of high-value vegetables such as: green squash, pumpkin, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, short-term vegetables, potatoes, cucumbers... Also in this winter crop, the district continues to direct the construction of 2 greenhouse models for growing vegetables with 5.2 hectares in Dien Thanh and Dien Lam communes.
