The test of the Agni-I missile, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, was conducted at 10:10 a.m. on November 22 (local time) at the Missile Range on Abdul Kalam Island.
The Indian Ministry of Defence announced that the test launch was aimed at enhancing combat readiness and was part of a training program for the Indian Special Forces Command.
The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) stated that Agni-I is a medium-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of approximately 700 to 900 km. Weighing 12 tons and measuring 15 meters in length, Agni-I can carry a 1-ton nuclear warhead.
The Agni-I missile has a specialized guidance system, ensuring it aims at its target with high sensitivity and accuracy.
The Agni-I was developed from the domestically produced Prithvi ballistic missile, using both solid propellant (in the propulsion stage) and liquid propellant (in the upper stage), allowing it to reach a flight speed of 2.5 km/second (9,000 km/h).
