The test of the Agni-I missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads was conducted at 10:10 a.m. on November 22 (local time) at the Missile Range on Abdul Kalam Island.
The Indian Ministry of Defense announced that this test launch was aimed at improving combat readiness and was part of the training program of the Indian Special Forces Command.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said Agni-I is a medium-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of about 700 to 900km. Weighing 12 tonnes and 15 metres long, Agni-I can carry a 1-tonne nuclear warhead.
Agni-I missile has a specialized navigation system, ensuring targeting with high sensitivity and accuracy.
Agni-I is developed from the indigenous Prithvi ballistic missile, using both solid propellant (in the boost stage) and liquid propellant (in the upper stage), enabling it to reach a flight speed of 2.5 km/s (9,000 km/h).
