Carlos Tevez just had an emotional farewell match with his hometown club Boca Juniors to prepare for a move to Shanghai Shenhua with a record high salary.

"Tevez says goodbye to beloved Boca, and says hello to his $760,000-a-week salary in China," the British newspaper Sports Mail reported on December 20.

The 32-year-old striker waved goodbye to the crowd of fans as he was substituted late in Boca's 4-1 win over Colon in the Argentine Premier League on December 19.

Tevez is reportedly set to sign a lucrative deal with Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua when the winter transfer window opens in January.

International and Argentine media have reported that the former Juve and Man Utd striker will become the new salary king of world football when he officially joins the team in Shanghai, with an income of about 615,000 pounds per week (more than 760,000 dollars).

Boca fans held up banners calling for Tevez to stay at his hometown club, but a Boca Juniors official insisted after the game that the striker's transfer to China would be completed.

Tevez is set to sign the latest big-money contract, not a rarity in Chinese football in recent times. Chelsea midfielder Oscar will also move to Shanghai SIPG in January, for a transfer fee of nearly $76 million. He will become the most expensive player to leave Chelsea. British media reported that the 25-year-old Brazilian is expected to be paid four times more by the Chinese club than he is currently earning at Stamford Bridge. Oscar's weekly salary in Shanghai will be around $494,000.

Chinese Super League clubs spent a total of nearly $250 million on players before the start of the 2016 season. Earlier this year, the Chinese football transfer record was broken three times in just 10 days.

Midfielder Ramires moved from Chelsea to Jiangsu Suning for $36 million. Guangzhou Evergrande then paid $46 million to buy striker Jackson Martinez from Atletico Madrid. Then Jiangsu paid Shakhtar Donetsk $56 million to secure the services of Brazilian midfielder Alex Teixeira.

In the summer transfer window, Shanghai SIPG bought striker Hulk from Zenit St Petersburg for $61 million.
