Carlos Tevez just had an emotional farewell match with his hometown club Boca Juniors before moving to Shanghai Shenhua with a record-breaking salary.

"Tevez bids farewell to beloved Boca Juniors and sends his regards to a salary of over $760,000 a week in China," the British newspaper Sports Mail reported on December 20.

The 32-year-old striker waved goodbye to the crowd of fans as he was substituted at the end of Boca's 4-1 victory over Colon in the Argentine Premier League on December 19.

Tevez is reportedly set to sign an attractive contract with Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League when the winter transfer window opens in January.

International and Argentinian media outlets have reported that the former Juventus and Manchester United striker will become the new highest-paid player in world football after officially joining a Shanghai-based team, earning approximately £615,000 per week (over $760,000).

Boca Juniors fans displayed numerous banners in the stands during the recent match, urging Tevez to stay with his hometown team. However, a Boca Juniors official confirmed after the game that the striker's transfer to China would be completed.

Tevez is about to sign the latest, not uncommon, big-money contract in Chinese football recently. Chelsea midfielder Oscar will also move to Shanghai SIPG next January for a transfer fee of nearly $76 million. This would make him the most expensive player to leave Chelsea. British media reports that the 25-year-old Brazilian is expected to receive a salary four times higher than what he currently earns at Stamford Bridge. Oscar's weekly wage in Shanghai will be around $494,000.

Chinese Super League clubs spent a combined total of nearly $250 million on player transfers before the start of the 2016 season. Earlier this year, the Chinese football transfer record was broken three times in just 10 days.

Midfielder Ramires moved from Chelsea to Jiangsu Suning for $36 million. Then, Guangzhou Evergrande spent $46 million to buy striker Jackson Martinez from Atletico Madrid. Following that, Jiangsu again paid Shakhtar Donetsk $56 million for the services of Brazilian midfielder Alex Teixeira.

During the recent summer transfer window, Shanghai SIPG bought striker Hulk from Zenit St Petersburg for $61 million.
