The Crown Prince was proclaimed King of Thailand, Rama X.

On November 29, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn became the new King of Thailand, succeeding King Bhumibol, who passed away at the age of 88 seven weeks ago, becoming King Rama X of the Chakri Dynasty, ruling the Kingdom of Thailand under a constitutional monarchy.

The succession of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, 64, was conducted in accordance with the 2014 interim constitution, announced by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) – the Thai Parliament – ​​at 11:20 a.m. that day during a special session. Following the announcement by NLA Chairman Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, all the members of parliament rose to their feet and chanted: “Long live His Majesty!”

Earlier that morning, the Thai Cabinet unanimously agreed to present Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to Parliament, paving the way for his ascension to the throne.

According to protocol, the Chairman of the NLA is expected to personally visit and invite the Crown Prince to become King. The Crown Prince will then have to accept the invitation and declare himself the new monarch.

This ceremony will take place today, November 29th or 30th. The new King of Thailand will have the royal title of King Maha Vajiralongkorn Badinthorn Theppayawarangkool - and will be known as King Rama X.

Upon officially becoming king, King Rama X will have the monarchical power to sign laws, witness officials taking oaths of office, and serve as the head of state of Thailand. He will also be the nominal head of the military, the courts, and the government.

However, all these powers will only be officially assumed upon his coronation, which will take place after the cremation of the late king at the end of 2017.

King Rama X's first official role will be presiding over the National Day celebrations on December 5th.
