Crown Prince was crowned King Rama X of Thailand

On November 29, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn became the new king of Thailand, succeeding King Bhumibol who passed away at the age of 88 seven weeks ago, becoming King Rama X of the Chakri Dynasty ruling the Kingdom of Thailand under a constitutional monarchy.

The succession of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, 64, was carried out in accordance with the 2014 Interim Constitution, announced by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) - the Thai National Assembly at 11:20 a.m. the same day at a special session. After the announcement by NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, all the parliamentarians stood up and shouted: "Long live His Majesty!"

Earlier that morning, the Thai Cabinet unanimously approved the elevation of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to the National Assembly, paving the way for him to ascend the throne.

According to the protocol, it is expected that the NLA President will personally come to meet and invite the Crown Prince to become King. The Crown Prince will then have to accept this invitation and declare himself the new king.

The ceremony will take place today, November 29 or November 30. The new king of Thailand will be known as King Maha Vajiralongkorn Badinthorn Theppayawarangkool - and will be known as King Rama X.

Once officially crowned king, King Rama X will have the power of the monarch to sign laws, swear in officials and act as Thailand's head of state. He will also be the nominal head of the military, courts and government.

However, all these powers will only be formalized until his coronation, which will take place after the late king's cremation in late 2017.

King Rama X's first official role will be to preside over the National Day ceremony on December 5./.
