(Baonghean.vn) - After more than two months of planting and tending, the early winter crops in Hoang Mai town are now ready for harvest. Favorable weather conditions have resulted in high yields, bringing significant income to farmers. The average value of winter crop production reached 90.5 million VND/hectare.

Mr. Truong Van Kinh's family in Hamlet 4, Quynh Lien Commune, has 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of land planted with early-season carrots. They started planting in August and have now harvested their crop. The yield reached 1.5 tons per sao. The early-season carrots are large, uniform in size, free from pests and diseases, and easy to sell at a purchase price of 10,000 VND/kg at the field. Carrot leaves are also used as feed for cattle, pigs, and deer. Each sao of carrots costs 2.5 million VND. Therefore, Mr. Kinh's family earned a profit of 12.5 million VND per sao, many times higher than growing other vegetables. Mr. Kinh happily stated that although the early season's heavy rains affected the yield, the high prices compensated for it, resulting in substantial profits for the farmers.

The family of Mr. Van Duc Nen in Block 18, Mai Hung Ward, cultivates 2 sao (approximately 2,000 square meters) of off-season chayote, starting harvest in October. At the beginning of the season, it sold for 9,000 VND/kg, and currently the price is 4,000 VND/kg. Chayote can be harvested for an extended period, with an average yield of over 12 tons per sao per season. This fruit has a delicious, refreshing flavor and a particularly crispy skin, making it very popular in the market. After deducting expenses, each sao of chayote cultivation yields an income of 6-7 million VND.

In the winter of 2016, the total cultivated area in Hoang Mai town was nearly 1,300 hectares, including 380 hectares of corn, potatoes, and peanuts, and over 750 hectares of vegetables, mainly concentrated in Quynh Lien, Quynh Vinh, Quynh Trang communes and Mai Hung ward. Leveraging the advantages of arable land in each locality, especially the experience of farmers in intensive cultivation of various crops, the production value per unit of production has increased significantly.

Several specialized farming areas have been established: vegetables in Quynh Lien commune with over 330 hectares, potatoes in Mai Hung ward, turmeric and spices in Quynh Vinh... Thanks to the effective implementation of crop restructuring towards the development of high-value commercial agriculture, especially the application of agricultural technology advancements, the value of crop production in 2016 reached nearly 313 billion VND. The efficiency of intensive vegetable cultivation has significantly contributed to changing the income of farmers in Hoang Mai district.

In order to further develop the agricultural economy, especially making the winter crop the main production season, Hoang Mai town has implemented many positive solutions. Large-scale model fields and specialized farming areas have been invested in, applying scientific and technical advancements and intensive farming to increase productivity. Farmers have received training in scientific and technical methods. Simultaneously, connections have been established with companies supplying quality seeds to farmers.

Mr. Vu Tuan Dung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoang Mai town, said: The orientation for agricultural production development in Hoang Mai is closely linked to the consumption of agricultural products to limit mass production leading to stagnation and losses for farmers. At the same time, the town also directs localities to actively invest in technical infrastructure such as transportation and irrigation to create favorable conditions for households to intensify cultivation and increase crop yields.
