On January 8, US media reported that President-elect Donald Trump has decided to replace 89-year-old Charlie Brotman, who has been the announcer at the inaugurations of 11 presidents since President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957.
Instead, Trump’s transition team chose Steve Ray, 58, a Washington-based freelance broadcaster who has worked for local radio stations.
Brotman said he was initially devastated by the decision. “I’ve been doing this for 60 years,” he said. Ray told the Washington Post: “I didn’t take his job away from him, I just continued doing it.”
However, Boris Epshteyn, a spokesman for Mr Trump's transition team, added that Mr Brotman would be honored as an honorary announcer.
“Since 1957, millions of Americans have watched Charlie Brotman announce the inaugural parade for the president. The Presidential Inaugural Committee will honor him as the honorary announcer on January 20. We also want to introduce Steve Ray as a new face,” Epshteyn said.
President-elect Trump will be sworn in on January 20. His transition team is said to have raised tens of millions of dollars for the event, which is expected to attract millions of Americans.
