US media reported on January 8 that President-elect Donald Trump has decided to replace 89-year-old Charlie Brotman, who has been the announcer at the inaugurations of 11 presidents since President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957.

Instead, Trump's transition team chose Steve Ray, 58, a Washington-based freelance broadcaster, to do the job. Ray has previously worked for local radio stations.

Mr. Brotman said that at first he felt very sad and depressed about this decision. “I have been doing this job for 60 years,” Mr. Brotman said sadly. For his part, Mr. Ray shared with the Washington Post: “I did not take his (Brotman’s) job, I simply continued this job.”

However, Boris Epshteyn, a spokesman for Mr Trump's transition team, added that Mr Brotman would be honored as an honorary announcer.

“Since 1957, millions of Americans have looked to Charlie Brotman as the announcer of presidential inaugural parades. The Presidential Inaugural Committee will honor him as the honorary announcer on January 20. We also want to introduce Steve Ray as a new face,” said Mr. Epshteyn.

President-elect Trump will be sworn in on January 20. His transition team is said to have raised tens of millions of dollars for the event, which is expected to attract millions of Americans.
