(Baonghean.vn) - With a passion for traditional music, Mr. Moong Van Dung and Mrs. Cut Thi Chien in Na Be village (Xa Luong commune - Tuong Duong district) have independently researched, learned, and learned to play many musical instruments. Surprisingly, they can even play the sul (a type of flute of the Khmu people) with their noses.

Originally from the mountainous district of Kỳ Sơn, Mr. Moong Văn Dũng and Mrs. Cụt Thị Chiến have been living in Na Bè village (Xá Lượng commune, Tương Dương district) for over 20 years and are passionate about the traditional music of the Khơ mú people.
Mr. Dung said that he and his wife have now collected, learned, and can play six types of musical instruments such as pi, tot, sul (various types of flutes), dao dao, mouth organ, and mouth organ.
During his free time from farming, Mr. Dung also tinkers with making traditional musical instruments of the Khmu people.
The sul flute (two-hole flute) is very simple but requires advanced technique.
The couple plays this type of flute through their noses, creating traditional folk melodies.
The pì flute is a very complex instrument, consisting of seven sections joined together from smallest to largest.
The tòt flute has one air hole and four sound holes, producing a melodious tune. According to the couple, they learned to make these musical instruments by diligently studying and learning from the elders in their village.
A simple musical instrument often used by Khmu women is the dao dao, made from a bamboo tube whittled evenly on both sides, but not many people know how to use it. When struck, the dao dao produces a deep, resonant sound similar to that of a gong.
Besides being passionate about playing and crafting musical instruments, in their free time, Mr. Moong Van Dung and his wife also teach their children and grandchildren how to use traditional Khmu musical instruments, hoping that these instruments will be preserved and used, contributing to the preservation of the unique culture of the Khmu people.
