Clip of Mr. Moong Van Dung and his wife playing the flute with their nose:
Originally from the mountainous district of Ky Son, settled in Na Be village (Xa Luong commune, Tuong Duong district) for more than 20 years now, Mr. Moong Van Dung and his wife, Mrs. Cut Thi Chien, are very passionate about the traditional music of the Khmu people.
Mr. Dung said that currently he and his wife have collected, learned and can play 6 musical instruments such as pi, tot, sul (various types of flutes), dao dao, khen moi, khen be.
In his spare time from farming, Mr. Dung also tinkers with making traditional musical instruments of the Khmu people.
The sul (2-hole flute) is very simple but requires high technique.
This type of flute is played by the couple using their noses to play traditional Tom tunes.
The flute is made very intricately, consisting of 7 pieces connected together from small to large.
The flute has 1 breath hole and 4 sound holes with a melodious tone. According to the grandparents, they were able to make the musical instruments they have today because in the past, they learned from the village elders.
A simple musical instrument often used by Khmu women is the dao dao, made from a bamboo tube with both sides shaved, but not many people know how to use it. When the dao dao is played, the sound is deep and deep like the sound of a gong.
Not only passionate about playing and making musical instruments, in their spare time, Mr. Moong Van Dung and his wife also instruct their children and grandchildren on how to use traditional musical instruments of the Khmu people, with the hope that these musical instruments will be passed down and used, contributing to preserving the unique culture of the Khmu people.
