(Baonghean.vn) - Russia is ready to discuss with the US the reduction of nuclear weapons and the lifting of sanctions against Russia, said Russian Senator Oleg Morozov.

The senator asserted that these are two independent issues. "We agree to discuss them if the U.S. requests it. As for Russia, we have never supported or encouraged nuclear arms races," he said.

In addition, Morozov emphasized, "For Russia, sanctions have never been a 'pressure' to force Russia to comply with any conditions."

Earlier, in an interview with The Times of London, US President-elect Donald Trump expressed his desire for the nuclear arsenals of Russia and the US to be "significantly reduced."He stated: "The U.S. has imposed numerous sanctions on Russia; let's see if we can forge good agreements with Moscow. One thing is certain, I think nuclear arsenals need to be significantly reduced."

According to arms control experts, the US and Russia currently possess roughly equal amounts of nuclear weapons, with each side having more than 7,000 warheads.

In 2010, Russia and the United States signed a particularly important arms agreement aimed at limiting nuclear warheads and missile launchers.
