Merkel has attended this annual conference, which brings together many political leaders, CEOs, and prominent figures in Switzerland, seven times since becoming German Chancellor in 2015.
However, a spokesperson for Chancellor Merkel said that she would not attend this year's forum, which is being held from January 17-20 with the theme "Leadership that listens and is accountable." Mr. Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States on January 20.
This is the first time Merkel has missed the Davos forum for two consecutive years. The German Chancellor's absence will be a major disappointment for the organizers, as her image as a steadfast, principled leader is very much in line with this year's WEF theme.
