| Each year, Dien Chau produces 15,000 tons of peanut kernels, with 50% exported to other countries and the remainder serving the domestic market. Several establishments in Dien Chau have invested in hydraulic presses to extract peanut and sesame oil. Each machine costs 150 million VND and can press 600 kg of peanuts per day. Clean, selected peanuts and sesame seeds are put into a press to extract crude oil, which is then transferred to a settling tank. Locals who press the oil say that about 10-11 kg of peanut kernels yield a 5-liter can of peanut oil.
This method of oil pressing ensures complete food safety and hygiene. Most locals bring peanuts and sesame seeds to the pressing facility. For every 10 kg of sesame seeds, the owner pays 40,000 VND in labor costs, while for every 10 kg of peanuts, the fee is 50,000 VND.

People wait nearby to receive the product immediately. This service is why many oil pressing facilities in Dien Chau are always busy. Photo by Mai Giang. |

Pressed peanut and sesame oils are considered safe for health and are the preferred choice of farmers.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Duc from Dien Phu said: "My family takes peanuts and sesame seeds to be pressed for oil about 3 times a year. This way, we reduce costs and ensure the health of our family. We also press oil to send to our children working in Hanoi and in the South..."
At the oil pressing facility, raw peanuts, sesame seeds, and various types of vegetable oil are also available for sale to the public. Sesame oil costs 120,000 VND/liter; peanut oil costs 100,000 VND/liter. Although the price is higher than commercially produced oils on the market, many people still choose to buy hand-pressed oil.
Peanuts are a key crop that brings in tens of billions of dong annually for Dien Chau district. Due to concerns about food safety on the market, many people have switched to using manually pressed vegetable oil. This has created opportunities for oil pressing facilities to earn around 400,000 dong in wages per day. The dried peanuts, a byproduct of the pressing process, are used by families to feed their livestock effectively.
