During the public interrogation at the trial, it was made clear that Giang A Pao happened to meet a woman from Tan Ky (Nghe An) at the trial of his brother (Pao's brother was sentenced to 15 years in prison for trading counterfeit money). The two exchanged phone numbers.
On October 1, 2016, the woman called Pao to discuss buying 1.5 heroin cakes for 190 million VND/cake. Pao informed Song A Chia. On October 4, 2016, Chia called a Laotian to place an order and bought 1.5 heroin cakes for 210 million VND. Chia still owed this person 110 million VND.
After receiving the goods, Pao called the woman and was assigned to receive the goods in Tan Ky district, Nghe An. Chia hid the heroin in his car, invited his wife to Nghe An for a medical examination, and took the opportunity to visit Pao's brother (who was serving his sentence at Prison No. 3, located in Tan Ky district).
On the evening of October 5, 2016, Pao, Chia and Chia's wife were present in Tan Ky, delivered drugs to the woman and were scheduled to deliver the money the next morning.
On the morning of October 6, 2016, Chia and Pao drove to pick up the woman at the money transfer location, but were stopped by the police for inspection. Following Chia’s instructions, Pao threw a plastic bag containing drugs onto the street but was discovered and arrested. The woman took advantage of the chaos to escape.
Authorities determined that Pao and Chia had bought and sold more than 586 grams of heroin.
At the trial, the defendants confessed their crimes. After considering the entire case, aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced Giang A Pao to 20 years in prison and Song A Chia to 19 years in prison for “illegally trading in narcotics”.
