After being stomped on the head (left) by Mings, Ibrahimovic retaliated. |
The punishment was handed down on March 7 after Zlatan Ibrahimovic accepted the FA's charge without appeal.
The Swedish striker elbowed Tyrone Mings in the face, as he jumped up to challenge him at the end of the first half of the match against Bournemouth in round 27 of the Premier League. This action was believed to be in retaliation for the visiting defender stamping on Ibrahimovic's head while he was on the ground after a collision with teammate Wayne Rooney. Both were later cautioned by the referee but not booked.
The ban comes into effect immediately and Ibrahimovic will miss United's next three games, against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals and Southampton and West Brom in the Premier League.Ibrahimovic could still feature in both legs of the Europa League last 16, when Man Utd face Russian side Rostov.
Mings has not yet been punished, as he has appealed to the FA. "We consider that the standard disciplinary action that would have been taken against the Bournemouth defender in this situation would not have been appropriate," the FA said in a previous statement. Experts believe that Mings could be banned for five matches.
