The English Football Association (FA) has handed down a retrospective punishment to the Manchester United striker for violent conduct during last weekend's Premier League match.

After being stepped on the head (left) by Mings, Ibrahimovic retaliated.

The penalty was handed down on March 7 after Zlatan Ibrahimovic accepted the charges from the FA without appealing.

The Swedish striker elbowed Tyrone Mings in the face while jumping to contest a ball at the end of the first half of the match against Bournemouth in the 27th round of the Premier League. This action was believed to be retaliation for the visiting team's defender stepping on Ibrahimovic's head while he was lying on the ground after a collision with teammate Wayne Rooney. Both were only cautioned by the referee and did not receive cards.

The suspension takes effect immediately, meaning Ibrahimovic will miss Manchester United's next three matches: against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals and against Southampton and West Brom in the Premier League.Ibrahimovic could still feature in both legs of the Europa League round of 16, when Man Utd face Russian side Rostov.

Mings has not yet received a penalty, as he has appealed to the FA. "We believe that the usual disciplinary action applied to the Bournemouth defender in this situation was inappropriate," the FA's previous statement said. Experts predict Mings could face a five-match suspension.
