Earth Hour 2017: No forced power cuts.
(Baonghean.vn) – As part of the Earth Hour campaign, Nghe An will switch off lights and unnecessary appliances from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Saturday, March 25th.
On the morning of March 2nd, the Department of Industry and Trade held a meeting to finalize plans for organizing activities in response to the Earth Hour 2017 campaign.
In accordance with the Law on Economical and Efficient Energy Use and Prime Minister's Directive No. 1171/CT-TTg on strengthening electricity saving measures, this year, the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Industry and Trade will post posters and distribute leaflets to promote energy saving at shopping malls, supermarkets, stores, offices, schools, hospitals, train stations, etc.
We will promote and encourage organizations, schools, businesses, households, and residential areas to participate in the Earth Hour campaign by: turning off lights and unnecessary appliances for one hour (from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Saturday, March 25, 2017); organizing volunteer groups to cycle to spread awareness; and turning off electricity on some main roads in Vinh City.
The launch ceremony for Earth Hour 2017 took place at 7:30 AM on March 25, 2017.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Huy Cuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, stated that while forced power cuts would result in better energy savings, the awareness campaign would not be as effective. Therefore, to create a shift in public awareness, the Provincial People's Committee decided not to implement forced power cuts this year.
The Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade also requested the Nghe An Power Company to monitor and record the amount of electricity saved during the Earth Hour 2017 period in Nghe An province for compilation and reporting to the Provincial People's Committee and the Ministry of Industry and Trade; the Nghe An Provincial Youth Union should preside over and coordinate with the Department of Industry and Trade and the Nghe An Power Company to organize the launching ceremony of the campaign; proactively develop a plan to organize propaganda for union members, students at universities, colleges, dormitories, and the community to participate in electricity saving activities in daily life and turn off unnecessary electrical devices. Media agencies should strengthen propaganda and mobilization efforts to achieve the best results.
The People's Committee of Vinh City and local authorities plan to disseminate information to agencies, offices, residential groups, and communities about the meaning and purpose of the Earth Hour campaign, encouraging participation in turning off lights and unnecessary appliances...
2017 marked the 9th year the campaign was held in Vietnam, and the second year in the three-year "challenge - overcome - change" roadmap leading up to the 10th anniversary of Earth Hour in Vietnam in 2018. Vietnam first participated in the Earth Hour campaign in 2009 in several major provinces and cities, saving 140,000 kWh that year. By 2013, the Earth Hour campaign in Vietnam had attracted the participation of all 63 provinces and cities, demonstrating the determination of the Vietnamese government and people to take action against climate change and save electricity. By 2016, the amount of electricity saved during Earth Hour had more than tripled compared to the first participation – saving 451,000 kWh. |
