Earth Hour 2017: No 'forced' power cuts
(Baonghean.vn) – In order to implement the Earth Hour campaign, Nghe An will turn off lights and unnecessary equipment from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25.
On the morning of March 2, the Department of Industry and Trade held a meeting to agree on organizing activities in response to the Earth Hour 2017 campaign.
Implementing the Law on Energy Saving and Efficiency, Directive No. 1171/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister on strengthening electricity saving, this year, the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Industry and Trade will post posters and distribute leaflets at shopping centers, supermarkets, stores, offices, schools, hospitals, train stations, etc.
Propaganda and mobilization of agencies, organizations, schools, businesses, households, and residential areas to participate in the Earth Hour campaign by turning off lights and unnecessary equipment for 1 hour (from 20:30 to 21:30 on Saturday, March 25, 2017); organizing volunteer groups to ride bicycles to propagate and promote. Proceed to turn off the electricity on some main roads in Vinh city.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Huy Cuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade said that forced power cuts would have better savings but the propaganda would not be very effective. Therefore, to create a change in awareness in the whole society, this year the Provincial People's Committee decided not to cut off power in the form of forced cuts.
The Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade also requested Nghe An Electricity Company to monitor and record the electricity savings during the Earth Hour 2017 period in Nghe An province to synthesize and report to the Provincial People's Committee and the Ministry of Industry and Trade; Nghe An Provincial Youth Union presides over and coordinates with the Department of Industry and Trade and Nghe An Electricity Company to organize the campaign launching ceremony; proactively develop a plan to organize propaganda for union members and students at universities, colleges, dormitories, and residential communities to participate in electricity saving activities in daily life and turn off unnecessary electrical equipment. Media agencies should strengthen propaganda and mobilization work to achieve the best results.
Vinh City People's Committee and localities have plans to propagate to agencies, offices, residential groups, and residential areas about the meaning and purpose of the Earth Hour campaign, to participate in turning off lights and unnecessary devices...
2017 is the 9th year the campaign has been held in Vietnam, the second year in the three-year roadmap of "challenge - overcome - change" towards the 10th anniversary of Earth Hour in Vietnam in 2018. Vietnam participated in the Earth Hour campaign for the first time in 2009 in several major cities and provinces and saved 140,000 kWh in 2009. By 2013, the Earth Hour campaign in Vietnam had attracted the participation of all 63 cities and provinces, demonstrating the determination of the Vietnamese Government and people to take action against climate change and save electricity. By 2016, the amount of electricity saved during Earth Hour was more than 3 times higher than the first time participating - saving 451,000 kWh. |
