According to statistics, after the incident of the collapse of the tin sludge dam of Suoi Bac Tin Enterprise (belonging to Nghe Tinh Non-ferrous Metal Joint Stock Company), in Quy Hop district, 20 households suffered fish deaths, with losses of more than 300 kg, mainly concentrated in the communes of Chau Quang, Chau Cuong and Chau Thanh.

Not only did fish die en masse, some rice fields of farmers in communes along the Nam Huong stream were also polluted and silted up. In Chau Quang commune alone, Quy Hop district, 300 hectares of rice fields were affected.

Although there has been no final conclusion on the cause of the mass fish deaths, Nghe Tinh Non-ferrous Metals Joint Stock Company has proactively coordinated with local authorities to provide support to affected households to help them stabilize their lives.

This time, 20 households that suffered losses due to dead fish received a total of nearly 30 million VND. Nghe Tinh Non-ferrous Metals Joint Stock Company also committed that when the cause of the fish deaths was determined to be the Company's sludge, the Company would continue to compensate the people.

Mr. Tran Van Tuan - Chairman of Chau Quang Commune People's Committee said that these support measures help people overcome immediate difficulties as well as stabilize production. The commune government also issued recommendations and notices for people not to eat fish or use water from the stream for production and daily life.

Mr. Tuan hopes that the professional agency will soon determine the cause of the fish deaths, as well as the water quality of Nam Huong stream, which is the most urgent matter for local people at this time.
