Tottenham extend unbeaten streak at home

In the first match without their main striker due to injury, Tottenham still took all three points at home, with a 2-1 victory over Southampton on the evening of March 19.

Tottenham's victory was decided in the first half, when Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli scored in the 12th and 33rd minutes respectively. Southampton fought back strongly in the second half, but all the visitors could do was a consolation goal by James Ward-Prowse in the 52nd minute.

With this victory, Tottenham continues to hold the record of being the only team in the Premier League this season that has not known defeat at home. Specifically, at White Hart Lane, they have played 15 matches since the beginning of the season, winning 13 and drawing only two.

This is the first in a series of matches that Tottenham will have to live without Harry Kane, top scorer, scoring 19 goals in the Premier League this season. The English striker suffered an ankle injury early in the FA Cup match against Millwall on March 12 and will be out for at least six weeks.

Coach Pochettino chose a 3-6-1 formation with Son Heung-min ranked highest. But unlike the 6-0 victory over Millwall in which Son scored a hat-trick, today, the Korean striker was mainly used as a decoy, moving, stretching the opponent's defense, creating space for the two guns.Alli and Eriksen, the highest players in midfield, finish.

The approach soon paid off, with Eriksen firing a volley from 25 yards out past goalkeeper Forster in the 14th minute. It was the Danish midfielder's 13th goal from outside the box in the Premier League since joining Tottenham in September 2013, more than any other player in that time.

In the 33rd minute, the gap was doubled for Tottenham after Steven Davis pulled down Dele Alli in the penalty area, and the home team's young star made no mistake in the penalty kick.

Southampton also had a chance, but their attacks lacked sharpness after losing their main striker Manuel Gabiadini to injury in the 32nd minute. The only goal the visitors scored, in the 52nd minute, was a situation where Tottenham defender Alderweireld failed to block Bertrand's cross, indirectly giving Ward-Prowse the chance to score.

Winning 2-1, Tottenham got three more points, and narrowed the gap with the top of the table Chelsea to 10 points after 29 rounds. It will be very difficult for them to compete for the title with this point gap, but the victory will give Pochettino and his team more confidence in maintaining stability and the runner-up position, in the face of fierce competition from behind from Man City, Liverpool and Man Utd, a team that has only played 27 matches.
