10 miraculous campaigns in Vietnamese history.
(Baonghean.vn) - Along with the glorious Dien Bien Phu Campaign that shook the world, our country's history has seen many miraculous battles that the enemy forces could not believe could happen.
1. The Battle of Bach Dang River (938)

| Before his death on the Bạch Đằng River in 938, Lưu Hoằng Tháo could not have imagined that the Vietnamese army and people, led by Ngô Quyền, would utilize the tidal patterns to transform the submerged stakes in the riverbed into a devastating weapon of terrifying power. The disastrous defeat at Bạch Đằng forced the Southern Han army to abandon their dream of conquering Vietnam. |
2. Victory over the Song Dynasty invaders (1075)

| In 1075, facing the Song dynasty's invasion plot, the Ly dynasty's king and officials adopted the strategy of "preemptive strike," sending troops to enemy territory to preemptively counter their strength. Ly Thuong Kiet commanded 40,000 troops to attack the provinces of Kham and Liem in Song territory, capturing numerous fortresses and severely damaging the Song army's forces. This delayed their invasion plan, allowing the Vietnamese army to consolidate its strength and achieve victory in the decisive battle that followed. |
3. Great victory over the Mongol army (1288)

| On the Bạch Đằng River in 1288, the classic tactic of burying wooden stakes, used by Ngô Quyền 350 years earlier, was recreated by Trần Hưng Đạo Trần Quốc Tuấn. In this naval battle, considered the largest in the nation's history, the Đại Việt army completely defeated the invading Mongol army – the most formidable army in the world at that time. |
4. The battle to destroy the warships of the Dutch East India Company (1643)
![]() |
| In the summer of 1643, the Dutch East India Company – the most powerful naval force in the world at that time – dispatched three powerful warships to join forces with the Trinh family on the Gianh River (Quang Binh). During the voyage, the fleet was blown ashore near Eo port in Dang Trong (Thua Thien - Hue). Despite warnings from the Nguyen lords, fearing the Dutch, they deployed 50 ships to fiercely intercept and destroy the enemy's largest warship, forcing the other two to flee. This was the first time in history that the Vietnamese had defeated a European fleet, and it was also a severe blow to the prestige of the Dutch East India Company. |
5. The Great Northern Expedition to Defeat the Qing Army (1788)
![]() |
| The northward campaign against the Qing army, led by Emperor Quang Trung in late 1788 and early 1789, is considered an incredibly swift military operation in the nation's history. From Phu Xuan (Hue), Emperor Quang Trung took only 40 days (including 10 days in Nghe An to recruit troops) to lead his army to Thang Long to drive out the Qing forces. Unable to believe that the Tay Son army could advance so quickly, the invading forces were completely caught off guard and suffered a devastating defeat. |
6. The Great Naval Battle at Thi Nai Lagoon (1801)
![]() |
| In the great naval battle at Thi Nai Lagoon between the Tay Son army and the Nguyen lords in 1801, the Nguyen army used surprise deep-penetration attacks and fire attacks similar to the Battle of Chibi in China 16 centuries earlier to destroy the enormous, seemingly invincible Tay Son fleet. With this defeat, the Tay Son navy almost completely collapsed, ceding control of the sea region to the Nguyen dynasty. |
7. The Dien Bien Phu Campaign (1954)
![]() |
| The French once believed that the Dien Bien Phu base was an impregnable fortress. However, with his extraordinary military genius, General Vo Nguyen Giap turned their belief into despair with the victory of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954. |
8. The Tet Offensive (1968)
![]() |
| Before the Tet Offensive of 1968, even the most imaginative Americans could not have envisioned the Liberation Army's direct assault on key locations in Saigon such as the US Embassy, the Presidential Palace, the radio station, the General Staff Headquarters, and Tan Son Nhat Airport. This military campaign created a huge impact, making a breakthrough that forced the US to de-escalate the war and enter into negotiations. |
9. The Dien Bien Phu Air Campaign (1972)
![]() |
| During the December 1972 Dien Bien Phu air campaign, the North Vietnamese air defense and air force achieved something the Americans could not believe: shooting down 34 B-52 "superfortresses," completely shattering America's plan to prolong the war and forcing them to return to the negotiating table in Paris. |
10. Ho Chi Minh Campaign (1975)
![]() |
| In late September 1974, the Politburo and the Central Military Commission met in Hanoi and drafted the strategic plan for the Spring Offensive of 1975, intending to complete the reunification of North and South Vietnam within two years, 1975-1976. However, with the spirit of "Speed, even greater speed, boldness, even greater boldness," the Spring Offensive of 1975 was carried out urgently and decisively, bringing final victory to the nation on April 30, 1975. |
