Before his death on the Bach Dang River in 938, Liu Hong Thao could not have imagined that the Vietnamese army and people led by Ngo Quyen would take advantage of the tidal law to turn the underground stakes planted in the riverbed into a terrifyingly powerful weapon of destruction. After their defeat at the Bach Dang Battle, the Southern Han army had to abandon their dream of invading Vietnam. |
2. Victory over the Song Dynasty invaders (1075)

In 1075, facing the Song Dynasty's invasion plan, the Ly Dynasty's king and mandarins proposed the policy of "First strike, first strike", sending troops to the enemy's land to attack first to block their strength. Ly Thuong Kiet commanded 40,000 troops to attack Kham and Liem districts in Song Dynasty, destroying a series of ramparts, severely destroying the Song army's strength, delaying their invasion plan, creating conditions for our army to consolidate its forces and win the decisive battle later. |
3. Great victory over the Yuan-Mongol army (1288)

On the Bach Dang River in 1288, the classic wooden stake tactic that Ngo Quyen used 350 years ago was recreated by Tran Hung Dao and Tran Quoc Tuan. In this naval battle, considered the largest in the nation's history, the Dai Viet army completely defeated the Yuan Mongol invaders - the most skilled army in the world at that time. |
4. The Battle to Destroy the Dutch East India Company's Warships (1643)

In the summer of 1643, the Dutch East India Company - the most powerful naval force in the world at that time - sent three powerful gunboats to join the Trinh army at Gianh River (Quang Binh). During the voyage, the fleet was blown by the wind near Eo port in Dang Trong (Thua Thien - Hue). Despite the objections of fear of the Dutch, Lord Nguyen still sent 50 ships to fiercely intercept and destroy the enemy's largest warship, forcing the two remaining warships to flee. This was the first time in history that the Vietnamese had defeated a European fleet, and at the same time, it was a serious blow to the reputation of the Dutch East India Company. |
5. The Northern Expedition to Defeat the Qing Army (1788)

The Northern Expedition to defeat the Qing army conducted by Emperor Quang Trung in late 1788 and early 1789 is considered an incredibly fast military campaign in the history of the nation. From Phu Xuan (Hue), Emperor Quang Trung only spent 40 days (including 10 days stopping in Nghe An to recruit troops) leading the main army to Thang Long to defeat the Qing army. Because they could not believe that the Tay Son army could advance so quickly, the invaders were completely off guard and suffered a heavy defeat. |

With this defeat, the Tay Son navy almost completely collapsed, leaving the Nguyen dynasty to take control of the sea. |

Before the Tet Offensive of 1968 broke out, even the most imaginative Americans could not have imagined the scene of Liberation soldiers directly attacking important locations in Saigon such as the US Embassy, the Presidential Palace, the radio station, the General Staff, Tan Son Nhat Airport... This military campaign caused a great stir, creating a breakthrough forcing the US to de-escalate the war and enter into negotiations. |
