Hong Anh's film received 8 nominations at the 2017 ASEAN Film Festival

The actress was surprised and happy when the work she had cherished for 10 years was recognized at a regional film festival.

On May 4, director Hong Anh and two main actors Ngoc Thanh Tam and Pham Hong Phuoc went to Malaysia to attend the Asean Film Festival (AIFFA 2017).

Hong Anh said her first film as a director - Dao cua dan quy cu received 8 nominations for the most important award categories at this year's festival. This is the first time in the history of this International Film Festival that a film has received so many nominations for award categories.

Within the framework of AIFFA 2017, there were 109 films officially submitted for competition and 50 films were shortlisted. Island of the Immigrants was one of 5 films officially nominated for the Best Film category, along with 2 films from the Philippines and 2 films from Indonesia.

In addition to the nomination for Best Film, The Island of the Refugees was also nominated in 7 other categories such as Best Director (Hong Anh), Best Actress (Ngoc Thanh Tam), Best Actor (Pham Hong Phuoc), Best Supporting Actress (Meritorious Artist Ngoc Hiep), Best Screenplay (writer Nguyen Quang Lap), Best Director of Photography (DOP) (People's Artist Ly Thai Dung), Best Film Editing (Julie Béziau).

Adapted from the literary work of the same name by writer Do Phuoc Tien, The Island of the Refugees is a beautiful and haunting picture of the characters' journey to find happiness and the meaning of life. Through that, it vividly depicts the unique Vietnamese culture, embedded in a multicultural and colorful social picture.

The main cast of the film includes young faces Ngoc Thanh Tam, Pham Hong Phuoc, Nhan Phuc Vinh, along with the contribution of veteran faces such as Meritorious Artist Ngoc Hiep, Hoang Phuc, Huu Chau, Phi Phung...

From Malaysia, director Hong Anh shared: "I am really happy that my film project, which I have been nurturing for 10 years, has finally taken shape and received most of the important nominations in a regional film festival."

She added that in addition to participating in AIFFA 2017, taking place from May 4-6 in Malaysia, the film crew will appear on the red carpet of the Cannes International Film Festival.

Here, "Island of the Immigrants" will participate in official events within the framework of the Cannes Film Festival, especially the showcase screening at Vietnam Night on May 20.

Next, the film crew will be present at the Vietnamese Film Week in Spain, taking place from May 23-25.

After participating in international film festivals, "Island of the Immigrants" will be released to Vietnamese audiences, expected in the fall of 2017.
