The actress was surprised and delighted that her work, which she had been working on for 10 years, had been recognized at the regional film festival.

On May 4th, director Hong Anh and the two main actors, Ngoc Thanh Tam and Pham Hong Phuoc, traveled to Malaysia to attend the ASEAN Film Festival (AIFFA 2017).

Hong Anh said that her directorial debut film, "Island of the Residents," received eight nominations for the most important award categories at this year's festival. This is the first time in the history of this international film festival that a film has received so many nominations for so many award categories.

Within the framework of AIFFA 2017, 109 films were officially submitted for competition, and 50 films made it to the final round. "The Island of the Residents" was one of the 5 films officially nominated for Best Picture, along with 2 films from the Philippines and 2 films from Indonesia.

Besides the Best Film nomination, The Island of the Residents was also nominated in 7 other categories such as Best Director (Hong Anh), Best Actress (Ngoc Thanh Tam), Best Actor (Pham Hong Phuoc), Best Supporting Actress (Meritorious Artist Ngoc Hiep), Best Screenplay (writer Nguyen Quang Lap), Best Director of Photography (DOP) (People's Artist Ly Thai Dung), and Best Editing (Julie Béziau).

Adapted from the literary work of the same name by writer Do Phuoc Tien, "Island of the Residents" is a beautiful and haunting portrayal of the characters' journey in search of happiness and meaning in life. Through this, it vividly depicts unique Vietnamese culture, interwoven into a multicultural and diverse social landscape.

The film's main cast includes young talents such as Ngoc Thanh Tam, Pham Hong Phuoc, and Nhan Phuc Vinh, along with contributions from veteran actors like Meritorious Artist Ngoc Hiep, Hoang Phuc, Huu Chau, and Phi Phung…

From Malaysia, director Hong Anh shared: “I am truly happy that my film project, which I have been nurturing for 10 years, has finally taken shape and received most of the important nominations at a regional-level film festival.”

She added that, besides participating in AIFFA 2017, which took place from May 4-6 in Malaysia, the film crew would also appear on the red carpet of the Cannes International Film Festival.

Here, "The Island of the Residents" will participate in official events within the framework of the Cannes Film Festival, especially the showcase screening at Vietnam Night on May 20th.

Next, the film crew will be present at the Vietnam Film Week in Spain, taking place from May 23-25.

After participating in international film festivals, "The Island of the Residents" will be released to Vietnamese audiences, tentatively in the fall of 2017.
